review by Tio Knight
So it's Saturday the 27th of September, 9pm and
I'm freezing my ass off in Helsinki with an even cooler bottle of Koff beer, the
first of many for that night. So why am I over 1000 miles from home in the
United Kingdom? Simple really, I'm here for Night of the Vampires with none
other than Jussi 69 of The 69 Eyes, an evening of mayhem I chose to attend only
24 hours before with no other weekend plans ahead.
The venue tonight is On the Rocks, a popular rock club in the heart of Helsinki.
A place where bands and DJ's alike perform for audiences regularly. Tonight
plays host to Jussi 69 standing behind the DJ boothe, beer in one hand, cd in
the other. Dressed in a New York Dolls t shirt and the uber-cool aviator googles
he can be seen wearing in the new Pirates of the Baltic sea video with Hanoi
Rocks frontman Michael Monroe.
There is no shortage of people in the venue, some even paying tribute to the
name of the event dressed as vampires themselves complete with artificial blood.
It's not unusual at On the Rocks to bump into musicians of all backgrounds, both
up and coming and signed and established so it is pleasant enough to bump into
fellow Helsinki vampire guitarist Bazie, band official photographer Ville
Jurikkalla and even HIM's Ville Valo.
The evening continues with the music showing a wide variety from Marilyn Manson
to Good Charlotte, 30 Seconds to Mars to Slipknot and even my own personal
request of Avenged Sevenfold. Jussi clearly has a passion for all music with a
rock genre and it is more than welcomed by the crowd both young and old. Hour
after hour goes by and before too long it's 4am and time to go. I make my
farewells to friends old and new thanks to the wonderful Finnish hospitality I
always receive, say my goodbye to Jussi who couldn’t believe I have to now make
my way to the airport and wearily make my way upstairs to confront a not as cold
as I expected Finnish morning.
Overall I have to say that this was an event that went far beyond any
expectations and worth every penny even if it did involve only being in Finland
for 17 hours.
Jussi as always was the natural entertainer who proved that not only is he adept
behind a drum kit but equally comfortable as a DJ and his sheer passion ond love
for rock music was more than clear.
Many thanks go out to On the Rocks bar and of course Jussi 69.
